Nigeria: A Cry To God

Oh Lord! For how long will paupers
Remain in this horrible state?
They get kicked around like lepers
By political “juggernauts”
They don’t get a fair share of anything
Because, like the ignorant and nonchalant
“Bigwigs” put it
‘They are problematic and deserve to be in
A trash can’

Oh Lord! Isn’t this bereavement
Though they haven’t lost a relation?
The bourgeoisies cruise around town in
Flashy, alluring and cozy “steel horses”
Screeching tires frightening the “have not”
Hooting horns deafening their ears
While blinding headlamps make them
Blink and miss their footings
Their rubber legs slam into puddle of water
Raining mud on proletariats
Who coy away and hide their faces in shame and fear
As any protest could lead to an untimely death

Oh Lord! What a horrible, malevolent, insane
And wicked country N igeria is?
They force the poor to seek “political asylum”
Which cannot come their way without
“Talking papers”
They promise to make life worth living
By ameliorating poverty but end up
Making a mess of it by aggravating the situation
With their evil and self-centered interest of satisfying themselves alone

Oh Lord! Evil conspires with madness to waste us all
How can the down-trodden survive these?
How can they live on, even as
They are made to schlep under the excruciating weight of penury
You are the refuge of these “free bondage” persons
Your wrath is more intense and explosive
Than a volcanic eruption
We will continuously pray and
Wait patiently for it but
The transgressors won’t escape it.
